Writing-to-Learn Activities:

Journal Questions:

  1. How were cave paintings created?
  2. What was the purpose of cave paintings?
  3. What purpose did the Ziggurat play in Mesopotamian life?
  4. Describe the canons of Egyptian painting, using examples from the book.
  5. Who is the Goddess Ishtar, and what are her attributes?
  6. What are the attributes of the Greek Goddess Athena?
  7. Describe the story of Laocoon and his sons, and how does it relate to the classical sculpture of the same name.

Journal Tasks:

  1. Choose an attractive mural in your neighborhood. Sketch it and describe it’s meaning.
  2. Look at stained glass windows in a house of worship in your area. What is the subject of the window? What are the predominant colors?
  3. Gallery Visit: attend any gallery exhibition at our BCC gallery in Bliss Hall. You can sketch or photograph any artwork from the shows and include them with your analysis in your journal.
    I'll update you on the gallery events and times.
  4. Visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, please note the numerous artworks we will discuss. Time and date TBA.
    Include some of them with your comments and analysis in your journal.
