Assignment # 3 – Creating an Illusionary Volume

In order to show three dimensionality (volume) on a two dimensional space (plane), one must use illusion. Shading, shape, and perspective can all be used to create the illusion of volume. In this assignment we will be using parallel projection in order to achieve this illusion.

First, come up with five geometric shapes. draw all five in parallel projection. Next, choose the best shape, and draw the three views of the shape, top, front, and side, on the same bristol board.

In Class, enlarge your chosen shape and divide it into lines 1/2 – 1 inch wide with pencil. Make sure the lines correspond to your object's shape. Darken every second line in a kind of zebra effect, making sure the three dimensionality is preserved. This will become the template for your cuttings.

Next, using your template, cut out stripes out of your white bristol pad, and assemble them into the shape on the black construction paper. Finish your composition making sure your work is clean and precise.

Take your time and be mindful of your work. Grading is based on cleanliness and precision.
