Assignment #1: Observational Drawing and Scale Choose an interesting, metallic kitchen utensil (salad tongs, garlic press, can opener, etc.) to work with. Next, rule out on a sheet of 14 X 17 inch bristol paper four (4) 5 X 5 inch squares, leaving 1 inch gutters between them. Draw your untensil in four (4) different compositions. Try to capture the lighting and shading on the object in order to make your drawing more dimensional. Do not forget to consider your composition when executing your work (use cropping and show or suggest a background), and try to make your work visually interesting. Putting a strong light source on the object will create a more dramatic setting for your work. In class, we will choose one sketch out of the four. Redraw the chosen sketch in three (3) new sketches, but this time include a human figure interacting with the utensil, in a way that changes the scale of the object. One of the three will be chosen to become the finished illustration, using a stippling technique with a razor point Pilot pen. Center a 10” X 10” square on a 14” X 14” piece of bristol paper for your final illustration. |
