Assignment # 6 – Creating a wine label

Wine is a sophisticated consumer product and wine labels try to convey this elegance and sophistication using graphics and illustration. Wine labels use special typefaces and graphics, usually more traditional and conservative than other alcoholic drinks.

Design a wine label, including type and illustration. Start with the shape of the label, and then determine the size of the illustration within it. Make at least three sketches for the layout of your label, which should include text, illustration size, and the shape of the label.

Next, get some photo references for your illustration. Using your photos, create a full color, enlarged version of your chosen illustration to proportion. Use your gouache paints to color it.

Next, choose and printout a page with several different type faces you think could work with your label; we will choose the best ones in class. Scan your illustration and assemble the label on the computer, using the chosen fonts. Printout a full-color version of your label and mount it for presentation. You should also email me a copy of your digital file for grading.

Good luck!
