Files Formats and Output

Photoshop can create different file formats, depending on your needs. ImageReady is responsible for preparing images for the Web. Photoshop is responsible of the rest of the options. most file formats cannot support more than 2 GB, but there are special file formats for extra large file sizes, like Large Document Format (PSB), Photoshop Raw, and TIFF (up to 4 GB).

For 32 bits-per-channel images, use the following formats: Photoshop, OperEXR, Portable Bit Map, Radiance, and TIFF.

For 16 bits-per-channel images, use the following formats: Photoshop, Photoshop PDF, Photoshop Raw, Large Document Format (PSB), Cineon, PNG, and TIFF.

When using the Save For Web command with a 16 bits-per-channel image, Photoshop automatically converts the image from 16 bits per channel to 8 bits per channel.

Many file formats use compression to reduce the file size. Lossless techniques compress the file without loosing any information; lossy techniques remove detail and lower image quality.

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file format can contain both vector and bitmap graphics and is supported by most graphics programs. EPS format is used to transfer PostScript artwork between applications.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) a term for image files produced by using a JPEG standard, using a range of compression algorithms. The highest quality results in the largest file, you can make a trade-off between image quality and file size.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) pronounced DJIF or GIF with a hard G stands for and is one of the two most common file formats for graphic images on the World Wide Web. The LZW compression algorithm used in the GIF format is owned by Unisys, and companies that make products that exploit the algorithm need to license its use from Unisys.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a cross-platform, cross-application file format. PDF files accurately display and preserve fonts, page layouts, and both vector and bitmap graphics. In addition, PDF files can contain electronic document search and navigation features such as electronic links. PDF supports 16? bits-per-channel images.

PICT is a Mac OS image file format for graphics and page-layout applications. Used as an intermediary file format for transferring images between applications. PICT format supports RGB images with a single alpha channel and Indexed Color, Grayscale, and Bitmap mode images without alpha channels. PICT format is especially effective for compressing images with large areas of solid color.

BMP and PCX are common image file formats for PCs.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics format) A patent-free replacement for the GIF, the, developed by an Internet committee and supported by all major browsers.
