Assignment 2 – Web site EvaluationDue: Tuesday, September 11. How do you know a good web site from a bad one? As you begin designing web sites for yourself, this question becomes more and more important. Anyone can write a web site and publish it for the whole world to see. There is no authority or expert who can decide what gets put on line. This is very different than a college library, where books have been selected by people who are qualified to judge their value. Step 1 -- Choose a topic you are interested in (cars, nature, food, music, etc.) and use google to look up some sites. Choose one of the first ten web sites that are generated by your search. Step 2 -- Work through the following questions, write up a summary of your answers and post them to the Discussion Board. Include a link to the site within your Discussion Board post by pasting the URL right into your post. First, some basic information: · What is the name of the web site? What is its address (URL)? · Identify the author or the source of the web site (person, group, organization). · Identify the type of domain (the last part of the URL). Is it .com (commercial), .edu (educational), .gov (government), .org (non-profit organization)? Something else? Web sites from foreign countries have their own domains, for example .fr (France), .de (Germany), .uk (Great Britain), etc. · What is the purpose of the web site? Is it a personal page, an educational site, a commercial site, an entertainment site? Something else? · Does the site provide contact information (an email link or other means of contact)? · Is the site current? Does it say when it was last updated? Now you can evaluate the design characteristics of the site: · Describe the layout of the site (for example: a header, 3 columns, and a footer). Is the layout of pages easy or difficult to follow? Is it easy to read? Is the content scaleable and accessible? · What is the color scheme of the site? Is there an apparent aesthetic plan behind it? Is it “image-heavy”? What quality are the images? Are the images used in an attractive and effective way? · Is it easy to navigate through different pages in the site? Do the links work as they should? Is the menu clear and consistent? Do you know where you are in the site even if you didn’t get to it from the home page? · How is the site built? Does it utilize CSS, tables, frames, flash, or some other technology?
